Email has become the standard defacto method
for fast written communications for all of us, including government agencies
and organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army, replacing other means
like Telegrams and Telex messages.
If a disaster strikes and a
community's "Last Mile" internet link is broken, or the agency
email server is down, then normal email cannot flow.
But, with Winlink 2000 you can keep your
ARES group and its served agencies connected globally without the
normal wired Internet connection
It allows an Amateur station to assist
served agencies and keep them connected from inside a disaster area,
and without normal email servers or Internet links.
- They can use their existing email
programs
- With their own computers in their own offices
- From inside their city or county or
around the world
- From inside a disaster area without
the normal email servers
- With no additional software installed on
their computers
When the hurricanes devastated much of the
gulf coast states this past Fall of 2005, they destroyed most of the normal
telecommunication infrastructure -- phone lines and cell towers were down
everywhere.
Yet, 1000's of Amateur radio operators
responded to a request from the EOC's and agencies in that affected area that were
channeled through the ARRL and then setup temporary
communication at many of the government offices and shelters, and the main
method of written communication out of the area was Winlink!
It is the fastest most dependable,
transparent back-up email system that bridges any distance that can
automatically switch from normal "wired" Internet connections to a
radio connection via VHF for short haul or HF for world wide communications.
